Equipment

  • Whisk, Oven

Ingredients

  • - 1 pound fresh broccoli florets: Make sure they are rinsed and patted dry.
  • - 2 tablespoons tamari or soy sauce: This adds a deep umami flavor.
  • - 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil: It brings a nutty aroma and richness.
  • - 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil: It complements the sesame oil with a smooth finish.
  • - 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar: For a light tang.
  • - 2 garlic cloves finely minced: They infuse a lovely aroma and taste.
  • - ½ teaspoon freshly grated ginger: It adds warmth and a zesty bite.
  • - ½ teaspoon chili garlic sauce: For that extra kick.
  • - 1 teaspoon honey: A touch of sweetness balances the flavors.
  • - 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds: For garnish and crunch.
  • - 1 teaspoon finely chopped green onions: It adds freshness.

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Broccoli

  • Start with fresh, vibrant broccoli florets. Cut them into even pieces to ensure they roast uniformly. Rinse them well under cold water and pat them dry. Moisture will hinder the roasting process, and we want to achieve a nice crisp.

Step 2: Make the Dressing

  • In a bowl, whisk together all the liquid ingredients: tamari, sesame oil, olive oil, rice wine vinegar, honey, and the minced garlic. Add the freshly grated ginger and chili garlic sauce for that aromatic punch. Mix it well until combined.

Step 3: Combine Broccoli and Dressing

  • Place the broccoli florets in a large mixing bowl. Pour the dressing over the broccoli. Use your hands to toss the florets, ensuring each piece is coated in that flavorful dressing. You can almost hear the broccoli singing with joy!

Step 4: Roast the Broccoli

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Arrange the broccoli in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. This allows the florets to roast evenly.
  • Bake in the oven for about 20-25 minutes, giving them a nice toss halfway through. You can tell they’re done when they turn a lovely golden brown and are tender but still have a bite.

Step 5: Garnish and Serve

  • After removing the broccoli from the oven, sprinkle the toasted sesame seeds and chopped green onions on top. Serve it hot as a beautiful, colorful side dish that will wow anyone at your table.

Notes

- Don’t overcrowd the pan: Giving each floret space ensures even roasting. If necessary, use two baking sheets.
- Adjust spice levels: If you’re sensitive to heat, skip the chili garlic sauce or reduce its quantity.
- Experiment with seasonings: A splash of lime juice or a sprinkle of crushed red pepper can elevate the flavors.
- Use a high-quality soy sauce: The flavor of your dish hinges on the quality of the ingredients.
- Bake in batches: If you’re making a larger quantity, consider roasting them in batches for the best texture.
