Equipment

  • bowl

Ingredients

  • 4 light hamburger buns
  • 1 lb. fresh tilapia fillets
  • 1/4 cup Japanese-style Panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 whole egg
  • 1 egg white
  • 2 tbsp. spicy Dijon mustard
  • 1 garlic clove finely minced
  • 1 tsp. sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp. olive oil
  • 1 tsp. lemon zest
  • 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 tsp. smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp. dried sweet basil
  • 1/2 ripe avocado sliced
  • 1 medium tomato thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cucumber thinly sliced

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Fish

  • Rinse the tilapia fillets under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. This helps remove any excess moisture.

Step 2: Mix the Ingredients

  • In a bowl, combine the tilapia fillets, Panko breadcrumbs, whole egg, egg white, Dijon mustard, minced garlic, sea salt, black pepper, olive oil, lemon zest, crushed red pepper flakes, smoked paprika, and dried basil. Use a fork or your hands to mix until uniformly combined.

Step 3: Form the Patties

  • Divide the mixture into four equal portions. Shape each portion into a patty about one inch thick. Be gentle; you want them to hold together without being compacted.

Step 4: Cook the Patties

  • Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add a little olive oil to coat the bottom. Once it’s hot, carefully place the patties in the skillet. Cook for about 4 minutes per side or until golden brown and cooked through. You know they’re ready when they flake easily with a fork.

Step 5: Assemble the Burgers

  • Toast your hamburger buns lightly on the stove or in a toaster. Layer the bottom half of the bun with a tilapia patty. Top with avocado slices, tomato, and cucumber. Add your favorite sauce, or simply enjoy the flavors on their own. Cap it with the top half of the bun.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy

  • Serve your delicious tilapia fish burgers with your choice of sides. Happy eating!

Notes

Get the most out of your cooking experience with these handy tips:
  • Don’t Overmix: When combining ingredients, be mindful not to overwork the mixture. A gentle blend helps maintain the fish's texture.
  • Chill the Patties: If possible, chill the formed patties in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes before cooking. This helps them hold shape while frying.
  • Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh garlic, lemon, and veggies bring brightness to the dish. Always choose fresh when you can!
  • Experiment with Toppings: Try adding fresh herbs like dill or basil for extra flavor. You could also add a slice of cheese on top just before the patties finish cooking.
  • Make Ahead: Prepare the patties in advance and store them in the freezer. Thaw before cooking for a quick weeknight meal.
